Ben Thompson portrays Sheepshank Sam, an old time shanty boy lumberjack who, using historical information sprinkled with tall tales, will transport you back in time to a lumberjack camp in Michigan’s northern wilderness during the late 1800’s. Participants will learn how trees were felled, cut into logs, skidded out of the woods, and floated down the river to the sawmill. Students will have the opportunity to use lumberjack tools and equipment such as saws, cant hooks and skidding tongs. Sheepshank Sam’s program, although designed for elementary students, will appeal to all ages.
